Some of our favorite books are the If you give… series. If you’re not familiar with this series, it is a very fun, well written set of books about what happens if you give an animal something. A few of our household favorites are “If You Give a Cat a Cupcake” “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” “If You Give a Pig a Party“, but there are quite a few more.
What’s fun while you’re reading these books is one little action causes a chain reaction. You give the cat a cupcake, he wants sprinkles, sprinkles get on the floor, he gets dirty, you take him swimming…. the progression of the day ends up taking them to a lake, the science museum, the ocean a few other places and in the end, they all end up making a big circle loop right back to where they started from. The cat comes home from the ocean, dumps the sand from his shoe, which reminds him of sprinkles falling on the floor ~ and then he wants a cupcake.
They are fantastic books, fun and easy to read.
What’s not so fun and easy is when your real life suddenly feels like you’re trapped inside a typical If You Give story.
You know those days right?
Someone refuses to put their shoes and socks on, which leads to being late to school, which leads to you being late for work, which leads to being irritated, which leads to snapping at a coworker…
I think you get my meaning. It’s as if one little thing can change the course of your entire day and end up taking you on a snowball day from hell.
You may not notice it as much, but it works in the opposite direction as well. If everything goes right in the morning, getting to school is easier, it seems you end up catching all the green lights, someone brings you a yummy coffee, and on and on.
In law of attraction terms it’s sometimes called the better it gets, the better it gets. The worse it gets the worse it gets.
So how do you get out of this cupcake day?
You change how you’re feeling in the moment. You don’t decide to feel better tomorrow. You decide to feel better right this very minute. Because it is in this moment that you create the future moments. It’s all very esoteric, but the thing is IT WORKS. Here’s a little more on the subject from Abraham Hicks.
While it is all about how you feel sometimes it can be hard to go from a cupcake day to feeling great. I thought I’d share some of my favorite ways to start feeling better in the now.
If it’s issues with the kiddo…
1. You remember the last time you looked at your kiddo and thought your heart was going to explode with love? Take 1 minute to go back to that moment. Relive it, the moment and especially the feeling.
2. Stop for 1 second and really look at your kiddo. Remember how beautiful they are, and how much you love them (when you don’t want to strangle them lol)
3. Remember you don’t have to act this way. Really, whatever you’re doing right now, whether it’s threatening, getting ready to spank, yelling, screaming, remember you have the power to react differently. Take a huge deep breath and pick something else.
If it’s issues with life…
1. Take 5 minutes to go outside and stand in the fresh air, whether it’s sunny and warm, or grey, raining or snowing. Go outside and breathe in the fresh air.
2. Take 3 deep breaths ~ it works wonders, you may be surprised.
3. Listen to your favorite song. (The feel good song, not the one you listen to when you want to continue feeling depressed)
4. Watch an inspirational video. There are so many things online that can make you feel good. I always feel better when I watch an Abraham-Hicks video. You can choose whatever makes you feel good though. Add some feel good videos to a playlist so you don’t even have to hunt for them.
5. Take a few minutes for some quiet meditation. Just sitting in silence, breathing can often change your frame of mind. If you have a meditation you like, why not add it to your ipod or your iphone so you have it with you whenever you need it?
There are tons of these meditations on amazon, most are under a dollar!
If you’re looking for a meditation on a specific topic, just use the search box to see what they have!
I hope these suggestions will help you maneuver out of a cupcake day ~ and back on the track of a wonderful, fun and productive day. I’d love to hear what you do to get yourself back in the flow. Let me know in the comments section!
