Here in Kansas it’s Spring Break time. St. Patrick’s Day is tomorrow ~ which means I need to get my potatoes planted, unfortunately the garden is not even dug due to a bunch of rain last week. Me and the rototiller have some plans today!
Yesterday, while I was working, Hanna kept asking questions, lots of questions, about what we are going to plant in our garden. I have my own plans, but I wanted to know what she wanted to grow. If there’s something not on the plan that we really can grow I’ll be glad to add it to the garden, maybe even create her a space of her own in there.
A couple months ago when I had a complete case of cabin fever I ordered a bunch of seed catalogs to get my mind geared toward Spring and start planning what groceries we’re going to grow this year. While some of the catalogs have no pictures at all The Gurney’s catalog has these fantastic pictures for every product in the catalog. They also have both food and flowers ~ which is nice.
She’s been in a cutting mood lately, and to avoid another cat incident I thought it would be fun to let her put those scissors to good use. I gave Hanna the catalog, and pulled out her big floor pad of paper and asked her to cut out the pictures of the food SHE wanted to grow in our garden. I told her she could paste them on the paper and create her own garden plan.
She was all about it! In fact, off and on she spent HOURS yesterday, and is back at it again this morning cutting and pasting pictures to grow in our garden. Every so often I hear, “I wanna grow apples, and green beans, and lots of other things Mama!” She’s also talking about wanting to rototill with me today.
She’s always loved to garden, and I’m really glad she’s getting more involved in our food growing this year. I think it’s important for kids to know where their food comes from ~ and it’s not the grocery store.

I absolutely love this post! It’s like Hannah has created her own little paper garden filled with wishes and dreams.
My sister is giving us a bunch of vegetable plants she starts in her basement during the winter so maybe this would be a good mommy/son project for me and my 4 year old Jackson!
Thank you for the inspiration!
No problem. Today we’re going to plant our potatoes in a bucket (since we haven’t gotten the garden tilled up yet) I’ll post that tomorrow ~ it’s an easy, contained, fun garden project too!
Wow, the first part of that project I could totally do, giving my kids the pictures, paper and glue to spark their imaginations. Unfortunately, I would not be able to follow through on the rest of the plan. Plants and I do not mix for some reason. I wish they did, some of my friends have wonderful vegetable gardens.
What a neat idea to have her make her own garden!

Why not get a pot and let them grow one or two things in a pot? It’s a great way to start them growing their own stuff! Or just let it be a fun imaginative project for them to work on. Ask them to create their “dream” garden.
